A short history of the club
The Southern Highlands Computer Users Group Inc began as a result of a public meeting of people interested in sharing their computing experience and learning how to solve computer problems.
The initial meeting was held at Bowral in May 1995. This meeting was successful and other meetings followed to structure the group as an incorporated body, this was achieved on the 11th December 1995.
The founding members were Allen Cupitt, Steve Gye, Bill Walsh, Roger Ware, Ian Ridley and Ron Clemens. These members are now Life Members of SHCUG.
Initial meetings were held in the rooms at Mittagong Library. as the membership grew the meeting location was moved to the Community Centre in Boardman Road, East Bowral.
The objective of the meetings was to have two or three presentations to provide talks of topical interest subjects for members with only basic skills, and another presentation on more advanced subjects. Also to assist in personal relationships there was to be a refreshment break. The format of the meetings continues.
Over the years the membership has grown in excess of 200 members. The monthly meetings attract an average of 60-80 members, depending on the season.
In 2000 as a result of the current president Roger Ware the club was afforded the opportunity of establishing an Education Centre in HarbisonCare Village. This afforded the opportunity of carrying out courses on various subjects for the members. The initial computers were old PCs made available by local firms. Over the years as a result of grants, gifts and club funding there are 6 PCs, 4 Macintoshes, and a variety of scanners and printers.
Presentations at the Education Centre and at monthly meetings are made using a digital projector and access to internet. The need to improve access to the internet has been achieved by wireless broadband at the Education Centre.
Another activity of SHCUG is offering access to the facilities to the residents of HarbisonCare Village, for games, emails and photography. In addition there is a similar service to those in the village hostel.
